The Power of Coaching – Why and How it Works
Coaching is a very different skill from supervising, when supervising you are typically giving direction, setting performance expectations, correcting performance issues, teaching the employee needed skills, and problem solving. A coach asks questions instead of proving answers, supports employees instead of judging their actions, and they facilitate development instead of dictating what needs to be done.
As such, coaching takes more time and is a very different skill than supervising or managing. There are some inherent contradictions when the supervisor is the coach. For example, the supervisor may have to document poor performance and take progressive disciplinary action, or the supervisor may be a designated reporter as in the case of harassment or discrimination.
